Merimbula is a coastal town located in the South Coast region of New South Wales, Australia. The town is situated on the Merimbula Lake, which is surrounded by white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters. The name Merimbula is derived from the local Aboriginal language, which means two lakes.

The area where Merimbula is located was inhabited by the Yuin people, who were the traditional owners of the land for thousands of years. The Yuin people were hunter-gatherers and relied on the land and sea for their survival. They had a deep understanding of the environment and were skilled in fishing, hunting, and gathering food.

European settlement in the area began in the mid-19th century when whaling and sealing industries were established in the nearby coastal towns of Twofold Bay and Eden. Merimbula remained relatively isolated until the 1860s when gold was discovered in the nearby town of Bega, and the area became a hub for gold prospecting.

By the early 20th century, Merimbula had become a popular holiday destination for Sydneysiders and other tourists seeking a quiet, seaside retreat. In 1920, the first hotel was built in Merimbula, and tourism became the town's main industry. The construction of the Princes Highway in the 1950s made Merimbula more accessible, and the town continued to grow as a popular holiday destination.

Today, Merimbula is a bustling town with a population of around 5,000 people. It is a popular tourist destination known for its beautiful beaches, excellent fishing, and stunning natural landscapes. The town has a thriving arts community, with many local artists showcasing their work in galleries and exhibitions.

One of the most significant events in Merimbula's history was the tragic Tathra bushfires in March 2018. The town played a vital role in supporting the residents of nearby Tathra, providing refuge and emergency resources.

Merimbula's history is rich and vibrant, with a deep connection to the land and sea. The town's strong sense of community and connection to the environment continue to make it a popular and cherished destination for visitors and locals alike.
