Distinguished and Famous people from Merimbula

🎬 Gillian Armstrong

Gillian Armstrong’s High Tide was filmed in Eden and Merimbula, giving the coast a place within an important Australian screen career. Released in 1987, the film brought together Judy Davis, Claudia Karvan, Jan Adele, Colin Friels and Frankie J. Holden. Armstrong had already made My Brilliant Career and later directed films including Little Women. The Merimbula connection is professional work on location, rather than a local childhood. A later community screening by Far South Film revisited that relationship, allowing familiar places to be seen again through the different rhythms and perspectives of cinema.

🎭 Claudia Karvan

Claudia Karvan’s role in High Tide connected an early stage of her acting career with filming around Eden and Merimbula. She had begun screen work as a child, before later television performances in The Secret Life of Us brought wider recognition. Her career expanded into production as well as acting. The coastal film remains a specific local association, shared with fellow cast members and director Gillian Armstrong.
